In 2004 a mom, Robin
Whiting, wanted her son Skylar to experience the thrill competing in road races. This was a special situation because her
son has muscular dystrophy and was confined to a wheel chair. So on a Saturday morning Robin and Skylar set out on a 5K race
in a wheel chair not really designed for such an event. As they reached the finish line Robin and Skylar’s Nana lifted
him out of the chair and walked him across the finish line as he raised his arms in victory. Since then Skylar’s dad
has taken over the pushing duties and they find themselves running in longer and more events. But the races end the same,
Skylar with a smile on his face and him raising his arms up in the air, experiencing the trill of competition.
One year later Skylar and his
family formed the Average Joe’s Racing Team. The Team has a simple philosophy; get together for races, motivate each
other, promote special needs runners and just have fun.
Average Joe’s Racing Team wants to introduce
running to families with special needs children and adults. No matter what the disability, we can find a way for a child or
adult with special needs to enjoy the thrill of running, completing in races and being part of a team.
